Robert John Thornton

Robert J. Thornton,  M.D.,  was most famous for his highly prized botanical work entitled The Temple of Flora, which contained many exotic flowers.  He was also one of the foremost biologists of his day. See title page below. The four botanicals which we offer here are from one of Thornton's early works, The Genera of Exotic and Indigenous Plants that are Met with in Great Britain, London, 1807. They are all stipple engraved with later hand-color. They are in fine condition and each measures approximately 17" high by 11½" wide. These botanicals are extremely rare. We have only seen one set in our 21 years in the map and print business.
