William Curtis
William Curtis was the best known artist of botanical engravings, beginning in the late 18th century. His botanical plates were published in the Botanical Magazine, starting in 1787. His magazine was published until well into the 1820's. They came in two sizes; the singles approx. 9 in. high by 5-1/2 in. wide and the doubles approx. 8 in. by 10 in., wide or high depending on the orientation of the botanical. All of the Curtis engravings are copperplates, with original hand-coloring and, for the doubles, two folds as published. Often they were highlighted with Gum Arabic, a technique used in the 19th Century to enhance the picture. Eventually there will be a picture available for each plate. In the interim, please feel free to ask us to send you a scan of any of interest to you. See Dunthorne 88.
