Sebastian Münster

Among the oldest printed maps still available to the collector are those of Sebastian Münster (1489-1552), cosmographer and scholar of Basel, Switzerland. Most familiar are his publications Geographia in 1540 and his Cosmographia in 1544. Originally printed in German, these landmark georaphical studies were subsequently printed in French and other European languages. These geographical publications featured very interesting woodcut views of major and lesser-known cities of the known world. Münster's city views pre-dated by decades the more decorative ones of Braun and Hogenberg (1573-90). These views varied in size from smaller ones injected into the text to larger double page wood engravings of surprising detail.
