Roman Rosettes

In 18th Century Europe, there was great enthusiasm for archeology, particularly as related to the grandeur of Imperial Rome. The discovery of the ruins of both Pompeii and Herculaneum and the excavations of decayed ruins in Rome resulted in the unearthing of architectural relics which revealed the artistic magnificence of ancient Roman buildings and monuments.

In 1781, Carlo Antonini published a study on the carved rosettes found decorating most interior ceilings of these ancient monuments and buildings. The publication included 100 different examples of these ornamental rosettes, found in the ruins throughout Rome and surrounding towns. The quality of the copperplate engraving of each rosette is extraordinary, featuring both the frontal view of the stone carving and a cross-section to show the depth of the carved decoration.

Many architectural remains and statuary now displayed in the National Museum in Rome's Campidoglio bear traces of brightly colored pigment, leading experts to conclude that most buildings and statues of Imperial Rome were decorated in colors. With this in mind, we have had our Roman colorist decorate these 200-year-old black and white engravings, using the blues, greens, reds and earth tones popular with the ancient Romans. Many of our clients have used these engravings to striking effect to line a hallway, a staircase or grouped above a low table or sofa. The engraved surface measures 8" high by 6" wide.
